June is National Indigenous History Month
During this month we will take time to reflect on the unique histories, cultures, resilience, and strengths of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across Canada. This is an opportunity to celebrate and learn about whose land you are on through listening and acknowledgment. It’s a time to reflect on and learn about Indigenous People’s history, traditions, sacrifices, and contributions.
National Indigenous History Month invites Indigenous Peoples to celebrate their history and cultures in the spirit of pride and preservation. For non-Indigenous peoples, it is an opportunity to learn and show recognition of the role Indigenous Peoples have played and continue to play in shaping Canada.
Here are some ways to learn, help, and be an ally:
Learn about Indigenous Peoples’ history and perspectives from Indigenous authors
Educate yourself on the residential school system and its ongoing impacts
Read the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report
Learn who are the First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples who may live around you
Support Indigenous artists, authors and small business owners -
Donate to organizations supporting Indigenous Peoples and their communities
Participate in a local celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st
Speak out against the racism, violence and discrimination against Indigenous Peoples
Continually do research and be dedicated to actively learning
Amplify Indigenous voices
